Welcome! Safe mobility is essential to healthy aging. Recognizing that lifestyle changes, along with modern day technologies and medical advancements, will have a significant impact on the driving experiences of the baby boomer generation, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety sought to develop a research network to collect insight on the driving patterns and trends of older drivers in the United States. The multidisciplinary research team assembled to investigate this issue is led by an experienced researchers from Columbia University, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute and the Urban Institute. The LongROAD Study is designed to generate scientific evidence for understanding the dynamics, mechanisms, determinants, and consequences of driving in senior drivers and for developing effective knowledge to ensure safe mobility for older people. Issues of particular interest to this project are those related to, among other things, medications, medical conditions, physical impairments, visual and cognitive functions, driving patterns, and driving exposure. Also of key interest will be the circumstances surrounding driving cessation (., self-regulation, family intervention, crash involvement, etc.), and mobility decisions and options for older Americans who no longer drive. About the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety was founded in 1947 by AAA to conduct research to address growing highway safety issues. The organization's mission is to identify traffic safety problems, foster research that seeks solutions and disseminate information and educational materials. The Foundation has funded over 250 projects designed to discover the causes of traffic crashes, prevent them, and minimize injuries when they do occur. To learn more, click here .
