In 1502, Isabella had an annual income of about 8,000 to 10,000 ducats, but after household obligations, including dowries for young women of her retinue, relatively little was left for art. Her ambitions outstripped her income. Like other patrons of her status, she could, however, trade on her rank. If it lent prestige to a patron to own work made by a certain artist, it had also long been advantageous for an artist to be represented among the collections of patrons with high social standing. When Ludovico Sforza wanted to hire Florentine artists, he sought word of their reputations from his ambassadors (see a memo about the matter from 1496 ). Botticelli , Perugino , Ghirlandaio , and Filippino Lippi received strong recommendations. It did not hurt that Lorenzo de’ Medici had hired each of them, or that all except Filippino had also worked in the Sistine Chapel.
